UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Mid to late 5th century. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.42 g, 6 h), imitating Leo I (457-474). Uncertain mint. D N LEO PE-RPET AVG Helmeted, pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust of Leo I facing, his head turned slightly to right, holding spear over his shoulder in his right hand and with a shield, decorated with a horseman spearing fallen foe, on his left shoulder. Rev. VICTORI-V AVGGG I / CONOB Victory standing front, head to left, holding long jeweled cross in her right hand; in field to right, star. Cf. Depeyrot 93/1 and RIC 605 (for prototype). Apparently unique, and of lovely Germanic style. Light doubling, otherwise, good very fine.
